Gas Fitting and Testing Domestic Appliances
Your Appliance that your wanting to connect may not be new. in most cases this is not a problem as we do many re connection of used appliances. We can check the appliance condition and certification to ensure it meets all installation requirements. Good tips when buying a second hand appliance, other then looking at its condition it is highly recommended that you check that the certification label is still on the appliance. Example AGA – Australian Gas Association Aproval Number. Without the certification number the appliance may not be approved to be installed. A search can be done to try and find it but that also requires model and serial numbers.
Using gas involves a level of safety, and we know you don’t want to trust just anyone. As licensed gas fitters with expertise in the field, we ensure you’re in good hand.
Installing New Gas Cooktop – Stove
Its very common to replace an Electric hot plate with a gas stove, cooking with gas is a lot faster and can be more responsive. Most Gas cooktops don’t use a lot of gas so it also efficient. Connecting gas to your kitchen for the first time may be easier then you think. Most of the time, we find the best way to run the gas line.
Gas Hob Overhead Clearances
Overhead clearances are important to prevent surfaces form getting hot, burning or even catching fire.
The Australian standards requirement is 650mm for new installations. To achieve the measurement start at the trivet and measure vertically to any overhead range hood. Please note that manufactures requirements will override the standards if the distance is greater.
The trivet is the highest part of the appliance where your pots and pans sit on. Please read the manufactures installation manual for all required distances. if you have installed an exhaust fan in lieu of a range hood the standard says 750mm.

Things that you will need to know
Not all gas appliances can be installed inside. Manufactured appliances can look the same but they are not. Most Gas Appliances that are to be used outside only are often labeled as such and are not safe for inside use.
We do not permit the installation of indoor appliances that lack a compliance plate with an approval number.
Some good news appliances for indoor use with no plate can be certified by a qualified person.
Most popular gas installations are domestic Cook tops / Hobs and restaurant appliances.

Gas BBQ used In Outdoor Patios and Entertainment Areas
A very popular trend in outdoor entertainment is to have a built-in BBQ and kitchen area on a patio. Only a qualified and experienced Gasfitter should undertake this job to meet current gas safety regulations. In many cases, fires, and/or Gas explosions, have occurred. Here are some tips to help you when you build your dream outdoor area:
Is the area you have chosen safe and legal?
- If there is a roof above you, and you have more than two sides enclosed, leaving only one side open, it would not be legal or safe and would be considered an internal part of the building.
- Areas with three sides, require at least 25% of the total wall area to be completely open and at least 30% of the remaining wall area open and unrestricted.
- Areas with all four sides but at least one permanent opening must not have a covered roof.
Installing the Gas Appliance or BBQ
Before building your cabinetry, ensure you read all of the manufacturer’s BBQ Gas installation instructions. Pay particular attention to the instructions relating to inbuilt BBQ’s. Make sure you meet the minimum clearance requirements for combustible materials and the design requirements.
Popular Beef Eater BBQ’s require a clearance of 450mm on all sides to any combustible material. Note that the cut-out section where the unit drops in must be all made from non-combustible materials.
Seal cupboards below the appliance where you store Gas Connection or Cylinders from naked flames. Also ensure the storage point has proper ventilation.
Ventilation of Gas Connection and Bottles
Regulation apply when you store BBQ gas bottles or place a connection point inside a cupboard.
With the same Beef Eater BBQ requires an area of at least 200cm2 vent. For each gas cylinder or a Gas bayonet connection point installed. Please keep the vents as low as possible as recommended.
Any gas vapours that may leak from the connections can then escape safely.
Vents installed in the cupboard will dramatically reduce the risk of a compression explosion as seen in the picture below.
Tips you may need to know
Australian Standards specify the minimum Gas Regulations. Know what they are before attempting any DIY.
The Manufacture overrides this minimum standard when the manufacturer has tested their appliance and deemed it overrides the minimum Australian Standards to operate safely.
Operating a Gas BBQ requires your physical presence at all times. Not doing so is a prosecutable offence by law.
Gas Pizza Ovens
Things you might want to check before you purchase one or install it.
Pizza ovens run very hot and require a large ventilation area. They must only operate on a non-combustible surface. As an example, a Gas Mate Pizza Oven requires a 350mm gap between the oven and a rear wall. Allow 300mm gap to the sides and 600mm above the highest part of the appliance.
Note in most cases Pizza Ovens cannot be connected directly via a bayonet or solid connection most require the oven to only be connected to gas via the hose assembly supplied and connected to a cylinder no larger than 9kg.
The information on this site is for your awareness. Gas fitting is a regulated. so sourcing a Qualified Gas Fitter is recommended for you and your families safety. By doing so any updated specification and Gas Regulation can be applied to your situation.
